Notes from area
meeting September 21,
2006
- Nobody has
volunteered as the area popcorn coordinator yet.
- Scout Brotherhood
camp dates wrong in area calendar; it should be Sep 29-Oct 1.
- Voyageur council
still looking for a rep from the area to sit on the council Cub camp
committee.
- Scouting courses
are open to non-leaders.
- Nearly all the
service Scouters have been identified. Chris Tyler and Jeff Criggar (Smiths
Falls) are doing Scouts. Charles Courtland (Carleton Place) and Jean
Trent-Lambert (Beckwith) are doing Cubs.
- There maybe a
Beaver Bash at the council level in the spring of 2007.
- The Rovers are
organising a Scout camp to run at the same time as CJ for those Scouts not
going to CJ.
- Scouters conference
planned for 2007 at the council level. Format is usually a day of short
workshops on a variety of topics. Attendees get to pick with workshops then
want to attend.
- Area trying to come
up with a list of "approved" mentors for Wood Badge.
- October Wood Badge
course date changing. New date not know yet.
- Gateway course
scheduled for Wednesday September 27th at the Carleton Place arena
and Tuesday October 3rd at the Port Elmsley hall. Have asked for a
sylabus to be published.
- Beaver Buggy racing
will be part of the February Beaver Brrr rather than Hobbies &
Wheels.
- Hobbies &
Wheels new date is March 24th. Will most likely be at the County Fair mall in
Smiths Falls. Venturer rocket propelled cars would be on the playing field of
the Smiths Falls highschool.
- Scout JOTA camp has
a theme of communication. $2.50/Scout cost. Marketing package to be sent out
in the next few days. Trying to get different radio operators that will keep
the radio stations open longer.
- Lombardy fair made
a profit of $2,516. Down from last year, but still up from the previous two
years.
- Balance in the area
account is $19,005. No financial statement released yet.
- Mention made of
Duke of Edinburgh award. Some high schools offer this program.
- John Stalker
purchased eight paddles and four throw bags at the CRCA auction. He sold these
to the area for use with the two area canoes.
- Asked for an
equipment inventory to be performed and published at the next area meeting so
all the groups would know what equipment is available for
borrow.
- John Stalker
applying for a Trillium grant. Wanting six canoes, trailer, PFDs, paddles for
the area.
- Carleton Place:
75-80 kids; two Colonies, two Packs, one Troop, one Crew.
- Beckwith: Joint
Beaver/Cub camp coming up. Scouts going to JOTA. Cubs going to Lafleche
caves.
- Venturers: Couch
rally in Ottawa, 8 kids, VenClimb, Crazy Canuck Challenge, RoVent, winter hike
scheduled in the Adirondacks.
- Smiths Falls: 27
Beavers, 17 Cubs, 12 Scouts. Picking their own apples for Apple Day. Beaver
sleepover at train museum, Scouts going to Brotherhood camp and JOTA camp. Cub
sleepover at train museum.
- Perth: Beaver
colony in limbo; if less than four Beavers will merge with Cub pack. 5 Cubs, 6
Scouts. Scouts to Brotherhood camp and JOTA camp.
- Port Elmsley:
Numbers low. Group camp in October.
- Purchased 25 area
crests at a cost of $31.25.
