1st Merrickville Report for Area Meeting

Events To
Date
- Scouts built and
install duck nesting boxes in Limerick Forest. Will be checking them
periodically over a number of years to collect usage
information.
- Scouts planned
canteen for Hobbies & Wheels. Fitness testing. Built Scout trucks.
Outdoor orienteering exercise.
- Scouts raced Scout
trucks.
- Cubs had a hike and
activity day at Camp Traill on Charleston Lake. Nice camp. Rope bridge setup.
Practiced fire lighting with magnifing glass.
- Cubs learnt common
animal tracks along with an associated game.
- Cubs did compass
practice with orienteering poker!
- Beavers did a
leather craft and built Beaver Buggies. Had a meeting that had been planned by
the white tails.
- Cubs raced Kub
Kars. White tail Beavers invited to participate.
- Cubs did archery at
Ron's Archery in Smiths Falls.
Future
Events
- Swim-up and
going-up ceremony.
- Spring Cub camp at
Whispering Pines. Fire lighting, orienteering, games, broomstick catapults
with water balloons.
- Scout
NiteVent.
- Scout canoe
practice at Whispering Pines and canoe trip. Three days over May long weekend
starting from Whispering Pines.
- Scout Trees in
Merrickville. Trees to be donated by the village.
- Pitch-in
Canada.

Issues
- 2005 registration
fee of $110 is way too high. It should be decreasing, not increasing. Fee has
risen 120% in the past four years. BPSA fee is still just
$45.
- It now costs a
family of three, $355 (including leader registration) to just get their kids
in the door with Scouting. And that doesn't get them any
program!
- Scouts Canada staff
salaries have risen from $8,985,000 in 2001 ($67 per kid with 133,884 kids
registered) to $11,969,000 in 2004 ($127 per kid with 94,230 kids
registered).
- Scouts Canada shirt
is $30, BPSA shirt is $18.
