1st Merrickville Report for Area
Meeting October 20, 2005
Events To
Date
- Registration at 66 kids and 15 section leaders.
23 Beavers, 32 Cubs, 11 Scouts. 8% increase over last
year.
- Retention at 58% overall. Beavers 54%, Cubs 63%,
Scouts 25%.
- MMS updated.
- School talks went over very well; was what pushed
many kids over the edge into wanting to join. Many parents telling us the
talks were much better than last year when Jeff Benson did
them.
- The PowerPoint slide show we did at the end of last
year has been a great marketing tool both to kids and
sponsors.
- Cub fall camp at Whispering Pines. 28 Cub in
attendance, 90% of pack. Did hike (new white trail), orienteering, crate
stacking, pellet rifle shooting, archery, first aid badge, shelter building.
Learn the camp game, capture the flag, tinfoil cooking, stalking game, find
communication modules (CDs) in the dark. Campfire with 2nd Smiths Falls.
Detailed 27 page plan on the website.
- Beavers: Visited Alpaca farm.
- Cubs: Pioneering chariots, night hike with Nigel's
Navy game, compass work.
- Scout participated in area JOTA camp at Whispering
Pines. JOTA went well; astraunaut talk was cool. My Cubs want Chris' cargo net
swing at their next Cub camp.
- Leaders participated in laying of a wreath for Year
of the Veteran with the Legion.
- Winning six (most badges earned) from
last year went on a flight in a Cessna 172 at Smiths Falls. Flew over
Whispering Pines and their homes in
Merrickville.
- Aerial photographs taken of Whispering
Pines.
- Apple Day for all, with Soapbox Derby
for Cubs.
- Created Master At Arms Pack speciality
badge. Cubs call it their "weaponry" badge. Cub must demonstrate proficiency
(i.e. specific target grouping) in either archery, pellet rifle, or
slingshot.
Future
Events
- Cub radio control airplane flying with Ottawa Radio
Control Club.
- Remberance day.
- Toronto Hobby Show on November 5/6 has free
admittance for kids in Scout uniform.
Main
Efforts
- Website
http://www.1stmerrickville.ca. Lots of pictures, documents, event
information, etc. Getting
historical photographs and documents from old Scouters.
- Hobbies & Wheels date change again ->
April 29th/30th.
Issues
- Area event information
needs to be distributed well ahead of time so that section leaders can
incorporate those details into their plan for approval at the group
committee.
- Link not yet added on
region's website to area website, even though Jeff Benson was told about this
problem a month ago.
