Rock Dunder Wilderness Camp

Description

On Whitefish Lake on the Rideau System, adjacent to the village of Morton on Highway 15. Main feature is Rock Dunder, one of the highest points of land in the Kingston area from the top of which is a dramatic view of the Rideau System. This was a wilderness camp - Carry In - Carry Out. 3 cabins with wood stoves for heating. The cabins are at 15 minute, 30 minute, and 45 minutes hikes from the parking lot. A trail leads from the parking lot past each of the cabins and continues to the top of the mountain.

During the winter, if there is a good accumulation of snow or ice, the sliding is amazing. This has been a favorite spot for Cub winter camps.

In March 2006, this camp including the 230 acres of waterfront (on the Rideau system) was sold to the Rideau Waterway Land Trust for $120,000.

For current access rules, regulations, and fees contact the Rideau Waterway Land Trust. In 2009, day access by the public was permitted, but overnight camping was restricted to the large cabin for groups at the fee of $12/person/night. Numerous restrictions were in place on activities that could be performed on the property. It is understood that even Scout group camping will shortly be forbidden.

The loss of this property was a tremendous blow to Scouting.
