Date Event
1-Oct-05
Apple Linking Day
Apple Day and Linking activity was
the first major event that the Cobra pack participated in in the year. Apple Day
was a major success, bringing in funding that helped us finance many of the
activities we participated in. After completing getting Apple Day complete, we
all went to the Corkstown Rd. campsite to give everyone an idea of what the next
level of Scouting was about. A very long day, but filled with many interesting
and fun activities.
3-Oct-05
Investiture Day
Cobra pack invested 11 new Cubs at
the Investiture meeting on Oct 3 and so far, I believe that they are all having
a great time in Cubs.
22-Oct-05
Fall Camp
Fall Camp at Camp Opemikon was well
attended and everyone seemed to have a great time, even though it got a little
cold and damp at one point. The activities participated included: Firebuilding,
a Cub favourite, Shelter making - survival in the woods is an important
skill to know, Canoeing - a little chilly that day, but we managed to cover the
basics of safe canoeing, and Geocaching using GPS units to find hidden
treasures
24-Oct-05
Cub Boxes
We made Cub boxes for the evening
meeting. The intended use of the boxes are for the Cubs to store their Cub book,
Pencil, paper, practice rope and all the other Scouting related items they
gather.
10-Nov-05
War Museum Tour
Our visit to the War Museum was well
timed, the day before Remembrance Day, in the Year of the Veteran. The new War
Museum is very large and features new exhibits that have never been seen by the
public before - if you haven't seen it yourselves, take the opportunity and
visit it in the near future.
19-Nov-05
Fall Hike South March
The South March Highlands hike was a
terrific opportunity to hike through a nature area that I bet a lot of you
didn't know existed so close to town. The activities participated in that day
included work on the Hiking and the Trailcraft Badges.
28-Nov-05
Parliament visit
The Parliament visit was very well
timed, in that the Cub Packs had the opportunity to witness first hand, a bit of
history - the defeat of the government of the 38th Parliament of Canada,
triggering a new Federal election. We got to see (in the distance), many of the
people who make the laws of the country
13-Dec-05
Bowling
Bowling was a new activity that we
tried this year, and although we don't have any new professional bowlers in 1st
Kanata Cubs, everyone had a great time. They did manage to get the ball down to
the pins (most of the time) and judging by the cheers, even hit some pins once
in a while!
19-Dec-05
Christmas Party
Since the other schools were
unavailable for the packs, we had a joint 1st Kanata Cubs Christmas party at All
Saints. As normal, with 68 Cubs 8-10 year old kids this turns into semi
controlled mayhem, although the Cubs don't seem to notice (or like it even
more). Bottom line for the evening was too much junk food (and some healthy
stuff), Charades, Christmas Carols and the gift exchange - all in all, a great
time for the kids.
9-Jan-06
Kub Kar build
An annual favourite, building the
Kub Kars and getting them ready for the races.
14-Jan-06
Curling
Sure looked like everyone had a good
time, curling at the Nepean Sportsplex. Cobra ended up with enough for 6
teams with just enough expertise to know that the point of the game is to
'throw' (slide actually, those stones weigh a ton!) the stones into the target
area at the other end of the rink and try to knock their opponents stones
out. Who knows, we may have put the seed for the 2014 Scott Tournament of
Hearts in place for a new Canadian Curling Championship team!
16-Jan-06
Kub Kar Race
One of the most exciting days for
the Cubs is the annual Kub Kar Races, racing the cars that they built and
decorated themselves!
9-Feb-06
Winterlude
The Jacques Cartier park visit to
the slides is always a fun time, getting down the speed tracks, or getting lost
in the Ice Maze and this year, the temperature cooperated and we didn't have to
spend the entire evening practicing our first aid on frostbite
injuries!
19-Feb-06
Winter Camp
Great weather after rocky start
(remember that BIG storm on Friday, the night we were supposed to leave for
camp?) - the temperature wasn't balmy, but if people managed to keep out of the
wind, it wasn't too bad. The Sun being out most of the rest of the weekend sure
made spirits soar!
The activities the Cubs participated in included at camp included: Snowshoeing, Orienteering, Rocket building, sliding, Broomball, Cross Country Skiing, Nature Hiking, Campfire and Marshmallow toast
25-Feb-06
Pasta dinner
Another successful Pasta dinner
evening to share the fellowship amongst all the sections of 1st
Kanata.
3-Apr-06
Scuba
An introduction to scuba for 3rd
year Cubs is an exciting favourite. Maybe we'll see a future Mike Nelson of Sea
Hunt fame in the future! Actually, there are probably very few of you out there
who would recognize the name Mike Nelson - he was the main character in a TV
show called Sea Hunt about a scuba diver, many, many years ago. Unfortunately,
I'm one of those who remember who he was :-)
16-Apr-06
Lafleche caves
For those who could make it to the
overnight sleepover at the Lafleche Caves, it was an experience that not many
can say they've done, sleeping in COMPLETE darkness in the cave, sharing the
space with the odd bat! The aerial park was a terrific experience as well,
giving the cubs the opportunity to walk through the trees!
24-Apr-06
Nortel tour
The tour of Nortel gave everyone a
glimpse into the intricacies of what happens to the phone and Internet
connection once it leaves your house. This is something that generally we don't
get a chance to understand and this quick introduction helped us to see the
complexity of the communications system.
1-May-06
Kanata Lakes Clean up
Our contribution to the environment
was the cleanup of Kanata Avenue from All Saints High School, South as far as we
could down Kanata Avenue. An effort much appreciated by the community, tidying
up the winter mess!
27-28
May Camporee
Yet another
Cub season comes to an end with the Annual Camporee. Cobra pack had 16 attendees
at Fitzroy Provincial Park for the Camporee and it sure seemed to me that
everyone had a terrific time. It's rare that the Cubs get to meet with hundreds
of other Cubs, Beavers, Scouts and Venturers except at events like this and
helps to make then understand that Scouting is much larger than just their own
pack or even 1st Kanata Group.
