Preparing
for Klondike
The main emphasis of Klondike is teamwork.
If your program promotes basic outdoor skills and teamwork, preparation
for Klondike should be fairly easy. Here are some ideas on how to
prepare your team for Klondike:
-
make sure your sleigh is in top condition
-
get your team used to pulling the sleigh over various
terrain
-
review the proper clothing for cold weather activities
(you'd be surprised how inadequately some teams are prepared - both youth
and adults)
-
brush up on your fire lighting, knots, lashing, compass,
first aid, and map reading skills
-
review the mandatory equipment with your team and why
it is on the list and how it can be used
-
practice packing the sleigh at a meeting (we've noted
over the years that the leaders pack the sleigh and the youth have
no idea what is on it) !!
-
get outdoors and test your lunch menu at an outing
-
select team work games at your regular meetings to prepare
your team
