008 Top Scout Challenge:
The Top Scout Challenge will be a series of three to four timed challenges.  Basic scout skills; map and compass, first aid, fire lighting, knots, pioneering, code work, and tracking, could be required in order to successfully complete the challenge.  The skills will be based on those in practice when the Scouting movement began (1907).
  • Challenge A will require map and compass skills.  The participants will be sent off to find and collect hidden clues that will solve the puzzle.   The faster the task is completed the more points that will be awarded.
  • Challenge B will challenge the participants to build a fire and boil water and make tea.  Extinguish the fire, douse the fire, and clean everything up.  Again the fastest team will win.  No matches allowed.  Flint and steel and/or bow drills will be used to start the fires.

  • Challenge C will require the teams to rescue an injured companion.  Use tracking skills to find the victim and first aid skills to stabilize his injuries.  Once that is done it is time to build a stretcher and transport him back to the hospital.  Time is important but so is doing things right.  Bonus points awarded for victims whose injuries are treated correctly.

  • Challenge D will test the participants’ knowledge about knots.  Knot tying and identification skills will be required.  This challenge will look easy at first glance but there will be lots of twists involved.  A reef knot might be easy but try to tie one standing on your head.

013 Wagons West:
Come and join us for a taste of the Wild West …… Scouting style.
Do you and your troop have what it takes to go head to head with another group in a pioneering challenge?  Take a trip back in time and experience a few of the challenges that your forefathers had to deal with as part of their daily lives.
  • Transportation – no planes, no automobiles, no motorcycles, no problem.  You are going to build your own covered wagon complete with your own custom canvas backdrop.  Better make it sturdy, as you will need it to gather things that you will need and want.

  • Safety – early settlers were exposed to all sorts of outside dangers and had to deal with them safely.  Their solution was to build a walled settlement or fortress.  Come prepared to construct a portion of a working fortress that will have to withstand your enemy’s attack.

  • Defense – your enemy is attacking and you had better be able to defend your fortress, your wagon, and yourselves.  Fight back with your own catapult and see what damage you can inflict on your enemy while protecting yourselves.

  • You are going to accomplish all this with ropes and spars.  Using four or five standard lashing and knots and about two miles of rope (I’m knot kidding), you will accomplish all of the above.  For those experienced lashers you are off and running.  For those individuals and troops that have not done much lashing you will be solid lashers by the end of the program.  Come and enjoy some competition, learn and improve some valuable Scouting / pioneering skills, and above all HAVE FUN.

There is no special equipment required, dress appropriately for the day (hats, rain slicker, sunscreen, gloves, insect repellent, etc), bring a folding pocketknife or leatherman if you have one, and your own water bottle.
